Panasonic Gets Tough With Rugged Connectors For Various Environments

Panasonic connectors come in a variety of types for multiple applications. One key feature is TOUGH CONTACT construction as explained here in this video. Panasonic connectors provide a unique design with increased contact pressure and improved spring characteristics. There are many advantages to this type of construction, including resistance to contamination particles and drop impact. A positive audible and physical “click” feature has been designed for the user to verify proper connection.

Stable co-planarity ensures all connector leads are on the same plane with minimal deviation to ensure proper soldering. Bellow contact construction allows for increased resistance to shock and vibration and also the ability to withstand twisting. V-notch technology provides contact reliability by preventing the entry of foreign particles, such as dust, which would decrease mating consistency. The exposed Nickel (Ni) barrier portion prevents solder rise, keeping the solder from moving up the contacts during soldering. Finally these connectors are coated in porosity treatment which covers the surface and seals any abrasions in the gold plating. With this treatment corrosion is significantly diminished.

Three main product types of Panasonic Narrow Pitch connectors exist; Board-to-Board, Board-to-FPC, and FPC/FFC:
- Narrow-Pitch describes the minimal distance between contacts for these connectors. Another feature of these connectors is low mated height, or how tall the connection is on the PCB. 
- Narrow Pitch Board-to-FPC feature 0.35 to 0.5 mm pitch and 0.9 to 4.0 mm mated height.
- Narrow Pitch Board-to-Board feature 0.35 to 1.0 mm pitch and 1.2 to 14 mm mated height.
- FPC/FFC connectors feature 0.3 to 0.5 mm pitch and 0.9 to 2 mm mated height as well as front lock, back lock and slide lock locking structure.

With these small pitch sizes and low mated height these connectors contribute to the miniaturization of technology. These connectors can be found in many consumer applications such as devices from mobile phones, digital cameras to laptops.
